Goal Scoring

NWEA Domain: Number & Operations - Fractions
Materials Needed

Movement Materials

  • Soccer balls (1 per team)
  • Full-size goals (2-4)
  • Scrimmage vests
  • Scoreboard or recording sheets

Math Materials

  • Student journals
  • Fraction circles or bars
  • Fraction reference charts
  • Pie chart templates
60-Minute Movement Block

Warm-Up (10 minutes)

  • • Full-body dynamic warm-up (4 minutes)
  • • Shooting review: all techniques from Days 1-8 (3 minutes)
  • • Introduction to scoring ratios: goals vs. attempts (3 minutes)

Main Activity: Scoring Challenge & Scrimmage (35 minutes)

Setup: Full-field scrimmage with score tracking

Skill Focus: Goal scoring, shot selection, success rate calculation

Activity Breakdown:

  • • Individual shooting challenge: 10 attempts per player (12 min)
  • • Team scrimmage: track goals and attempts (18 min)
  • • Math connection: calculate scoring percentage (5 min)

Key Metric: Goals made ÷ Total attempts = Scoring percentage (fraction)

Cool Down (15 minutes)

  • • Full-body static stretching (5 minutes)
  • • Record individual and team scoring data (6 minutes)
  • • Reflection: What fraction of shots scored? (4 minutes)

Review & Connect (10 minutes)

  • • Review scoring data from movement block
  • • Introduce: Fractions and Ratios
  • • Soccer connection: "What part of your shots scored?"

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

Skills: Understanding Fractions, Part-Whole Relationships, Comparing Fractions

  • • Define fractions: numerator (part) and denominator (whole) (5 min)
  • • Model with fraction circles: 1/2, 1/4, 3/4 (5 min)
  • • Apply to scoring: 4 goals out of 10 shots = 4/10 (5 min)

Example Problems:

1. You scored 5 goals in 10 attempts. Write as a fraction.

2. Which is better: 3/5 or 2/5 scoring rate? Why?

Guided Practice (20 minutes)

  • • Create fraction models using manipulatives (10 min)
  • • Compare scoring fractions between classmates (10 min)

Independent Work & Exit Ticket (15 minutes)

  • • Complete journal fraction problem set (10 min)
  • • Exit ticket: "Shade 3/4 of a circle and explain." (5 min)

Safety First

Full scrimmage requires vigilant supervision. Ensure proper spacing and fair play.

Time Management

Assign student scorekeepers to track attempts. Have data recording sheets ready.

Math Accountability

Students must correctly write and interpret their scoring fractions. Verify understanding of numerator/denominator.

Common Misconceptions

Students think bigger denominator = better score. Clarify: 3/5 is better than 3/10 (same numerator, smaller denominator).
