Defensive Strategies

NWEA Domain: Operations & Algebraic Thinking
Materials Needed

Movement Materials

  • Soccer balls (1 per team)
  • Scrimmage vests (multiple colors)
  • Cones for field markings
  • Stopwatch for timed scenarios

Math Materials

  • Student journals
  • Pattern blocks or tiles
  • Problem-solving strategy posters
  • Whiteboard for group work
60-Minute Movement Block

Warm-Up (10 minutes)

  • • Full-body dynamic warm-up (3 minutes)
  • • Defensive stance and positioning review (4 minutes)
  • • Pattern recognition: How do offenses repeat patterns? (3 minutes)

Main Activity: Defensive Drills & Problem Solving (35 minutes)

Setup: Defensive scenarios with numerical advantages/disadvantages

Skill Focus: Defensive positioning, reading offensive patterns, strategic thinking

Activity Breakdown:

  • • 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 defensive scenarios (15 min)
  • • Pattern recognition: identify repeated offensive plays (10 min)
  • • Problem-solving scrimmage: adapt defense to opponent (10 min)

Track: Successful defensive stops, patterns observed, problems solved

Cool Down (15 minutes)

  • • Team stretching and recovery (5 minutes)
  • • Record defensive stats and patterns (5 minutes)
  • • Team debrief: What patterns did we see? How did we solve them? (5 minutes)

60-Minute Math Lab Breakdown

Review & Connect (10 minutes)

  • • Review defensive data from movement block
  • • Introduce: Patterns and Problem Solving
  • • Soccer connection: "How did we figure out the opponent's pattern?"

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

Skills: Pattern Recognition, Problem-Solving Strategies, Logical Reasoning

  • • Identify repeating patterns in numbers and shapes (5 min)
  • • Problem-solving steps: Read, Plan, Solve, Check (5 min)
  • • Apply to defense: predict next move in pattern (5 min)

Example Problems:

1. Pattern: Pass left, dribble, pass right, dribble. What comes next?

2. Your team made 2 stops, then 4, then 6. What's the pattern? Predict next.

Guided Practice (20 minutes)

  • • Work through multi-step word problems as a class (10 min)
  • • Small groups: solve soccer scenario problems (10 min)

Independent Work & Exit Ticket (15 minutes)

  • • Complete journal problem-solving set (10 min)
  • • Exit ticket: "Find the pattern: 3, 6, 9, ___, 15" (5 min)

Safety First

Monitor physical contact during defensive drills. Emphasize positioning over pushing.

Time Management

Keep scenarios brief and focused. Use whistle to rotate quickly between drills.

Common Misconceptions

Students may rush to answer without identifying the pattern. Model: observe first, predict second.
