Materials Needed

Movement Materials

  • Cones for sprint lanes (20-30)
  • Multiple stopwatches (4-6)
  • Measuring tape
  • Recording clipboards

Math Materials

  • Student journals
  • Analog clock model
  • Time reference charts (seconds/minutes)
  • Calculators (optional)
60-Minute Movement Block

Warm-Up (10 minutes)

  • • Progressive speed warm-up: jog, stride, sprint (4 minutes)
  • • Acceleration technique: starting position, first steps (3 minutes)
  • • Practice timing with stopwatches (3 minutes)

Main Activity: Timed Sprint Challenges (35 minutes)

Setup: Sprint lanes at 20, 30, and 40 yards

Skill Focus: Maximum speed, explosive starts, time awareness

Activity Breakdown:

  • • Distance 1 (20 yards): 3 timed sprints per student (10 min)
  • • Distance 2 (30 yards): 3 timed sprints per student (10 min)
  • • Distance 3 (40 yards): 3 timed sprints per student (10 min)
  • • Math connection: Compare times, calculate differences (5 min)

Key: Record all times to nearest tenth of a second (e.g., 5.3 seconds)

Cool Down (15 minutes)

  • • Walking recovery and static stretching (6 minutes)
  • • Record all sprint times in data table (5 minutes)
  • • Reflection: Which distance was fastest per second? (4 minutes)

Review & Connect (10 minutes)

  • • Review sprint times from movement block
  • • Introduce: Time and Rate Calculations
  • • Soccer connection: "How fast did you run?"

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

Skills: Telling Time, Elapsed Time, Reading Decimals (tenths)

  • • Review time units: seconds, minutes, hours (4 min)
  • • Read decimal times: 5.3 seconds = 5 and 3 tenths (5 min)
  • • Compare times: which is faster? (6 min)

Example Problems:

1. Your times: 5.2 sec, 5.8 sec, 5.1 sec. Which is fastest?

2. If you improved from 6.5 sec to 6.0 sec, how much faster?

Guided Practice (20 minutes)

  • • Order sprint times from fastest to slowest (8 min)
  • • Calculate improvement: difference between trials (12 min)

Independent Work & Exit Ticket (15 minutes)

  • • Complete journal time problem set (10 min)
  • • Exit ticket: "Which is faster: 4.7 sec or 5.2 sec?" (5 min)

Proper warm-up essential for sprinting. Clear lanes before each sprint. Monitor for signs of fatigue.

Time Management

Assign timers to student partners. Rotate roles to keep everyone engaged during rest periods.

Accurate timing critical. Verify students can read decimal times correctly. Check all data entries.

Common Misconceptions

Students think bigger numbers = faster. Reinforce: lower time = faster speed.
