Team Formation

NWEA Domain: Geometry
Materials Needed

Movement Materials

  • Soccer balls (1 per team)
  • Cones for formation markers
  • Scrimmage vests (2 colors)
  • Formation diagram boards

Math Materials

  • Student journals
  • Shape templates and rulers
  • Geometry posters (2D shapes)
  • Grid paper for formations
60-Minute Movement Block

Warm-Up (10 minutes)

  • • Full-body dynamic warm-up (3 minutes)
  • • Introduction to formations: 3-2-1, 2-3-1, diamond (4 minutes)
  • • Shape recognition: What shapes do you see in formations? (3 minutes)

Main Activity: Formation Practice & Scrimmage (35 minutes)

Setup: Two teams practice different formations

Skill Focus: Maintaining shape, understanding positional relationships

Activity Breakdown:

  • • Formation walkthroughs: practice each shape (12 min)
  • • Scrimmage with formation focus (18 min)
  • • Shape identification: count triangles, squares in formations (5 min)

Key Formations: Triangle (3-2-1), Rectangle (2-2-2), Diamond (1-3-1-1)

Cool Down (15 minutes)

  • • Team stretching in formation shapes (5 minutes)
  • • Draw formations on grid paper (5 minutes)
  • • Discussion: What shapes did we use today? (5 minutes)

60-Minute Math Lab Breakdown

Review & Connect (10 minutes)

  • • Review formations from movement block
  • • Introduce: Geometry and Shapes
  • • Soccer connection: "What shapes did our formations make?"

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

Skills: 2D Shape Recognition, Sides/Corners, Shape Attributes

  • • Identify and name 2D shapes: triangle, square, rectangle, rhombus (6 min)
  • • Count sides and corners/vertices (4 min)
  • • Apply to formations: classify by shape properties (5 min)

Example Problems:

1. Our 3-player line made a triangle. How many sides? How many corners?

2. Name 3 shapes you could use for a soccer formation.

Guided Practice (20 minutes)

  • • Draw and label formations using correct shape names (10 min)
  • • Shape hunt: find 2D shapes around the classroom (10 min)

Independent Work & Exit Ticket (15 minutes)

  • • Complete journal geometry problem set (10 min)
  • • Exit ticket: "Draw a shape with 4 equal sides. Name it." (5 min)

  • • Focus on 3 basic shapes only
  • • Use shape templates for tracing

Maintain awareness during scrimmage. Ensure formations don't create collisions.

Time Management

Have formation diagrams ready. Use visual aids to speed up shape instruction.

Math Accountability

Students must correctly identify and draw at least 3 shapes. Check journal entries for accuracy.

Common Misconceptions

Students confuse sides with corners. Count explicitly and use correct terminology consistently.
