Shooting Technique

NWEA Domain: Operations & Algebraic Thinking
Materials Needed

Movement Materials

  • Soccer balls (1 per student)
  • Goals or target nets (2-4)
  • Markers for shooting positions
  • Scoresheet for attempts

Math Materials

  • Student journals
  • Subtraction flash cards
  • Number lines (0-20)
  • Whiteboard and markers
60-Minute Movement Block

Warm-Up (10 minutes)

  • • Dynamic leg stretching and activation (3 minutes)
  • • Shooting form demonstration: plant foot, contact point, follow-through (4 minutes)
  • • Practice shots from stationary position (3 minutes)

Main Activity: Goal Shooting Challenge (35 minutes)

Setup: Shooting stations at 12, 15, and 18 yards from goal

Skill Focus: Accurate shooting with laces, aiming for corners

Activity Breakdown:

  • • Form practice at each distance (10 min)
  • • Timed shooting rounds: 3 rounds, 10 shots each (20 min)
  • • Math connection: Calculate goals made vs. missed (5 min)

Record: Total attempts AND total goals for each round

Cool Down (15 minutes)

  • • Static stretching: Hip flexors, quads, groin (5 minutes)
  • • Data entry: Record goals and misses (5 minutes)
  • • Reflection: How many misses in each round? (5 minutes)

60-Minute Math Lab Breakdown

Review & Connect (10 minutes)

  • • Review shooting data from movement block
  • • Introduce: Subtraction and Difference
  • • Soccer connection: "How many shots did you miss?"

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

Skills: Subtraction within 20, Finding Difference, Part-Whole Relationships

  • • Model subtraction as "taking away" and "finding difference" (6 min)
  • • Use number line strategy: count back and count up (5 min)
  • • Apply to soccer: 10 attempts - 7 goals = ? misses (4 min)

Example Problems:

1. You took 10 shots and made 6. How many did you miss? (10 - 6 = ?)

2. Last round you made 5 goals. This round you made 8. What's the difference?

Guided Practice (20 minutes)

  • • Work through subtraction problems using personal shooting data (12 min)
  • • Partner practice: Compare each other's scores, find differences (8 min)

Independent Work & Exit Ticket (15 minutes)

  • • Complete journal subtraction problem set (10 min)
  • • Exit ticket: "15 - 8 = ? Show on number line." (5 min)
Differentiation Strategies

Below Grade Level

  • • Use counters for all subtraction
  • • Number line always available
  • • Subtraction within 10 only
  • • Visual part-whole diagrams
  • • Reduce problem set to 5 questions

On Grade Level

  • • Subtraction within 20
  • • Show two strategies per problem
  • • Find difference between rounds
  • • Complete full problem set
  • • Write subtraction sentences

Above Grade Level

  • • Multi-digit subtraction (within 100)
  • • Compare class data, multiple differences
  • • Missing addend problems (? + 7 = 15)

⚠️ Important Coaching Notes

Safety First

Designate shooters and ball retrievers. Never allow students behind goal during shooting.

Time Management

Keep shooting rotations tight. Use multiple goals if available to maximize practice time.

Math Accountability

Students must show subtraction work, not just answers. Check understanding during independent practice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may struggle with "part-whole" thinking. Model explicitly: whole (attempts) - part (made) = other part (missed).
