Passing Accuracy
Movement Materials
- Soccer balls (1 per pair)
- Target cones or goals (6-8)
- Measuring tape
- Scorecards for tracking
Math Materials
- Student journals
- Addition flash cards
- Base-10 blocks or counters
- Whiteboard for demonstrations
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- • Dynamic stretching with partner (3 minutes)
- • Passing fundamentals review: Inside foot technique (4 minutes)
- • Skip counting by 2s while passing back and forth (3 minutes)
Main Activity: Target Passing Challenge (35 minutes)
Setup: Set up 6 targets at distances of 10, 15, and 20 yards
Skill Focus: Accurate ground passes using inside of foot
Activity Breakdown:
- • Demo and practice (8 min): Teach proper form, practice at each distance
- • Scoring rounds (22 min): 3 rounds of 10 attempts, track hits and misses
- • Math integration (5 min): Add up successful passes, find total score
Scoring: Close target = 2 points, Medium = 3 points, Far = 5 points
Cool Down (15 minutes)
- • Partner stretching routine (5 minutes)
- • Record scores in data table (5 minutes)
- • Discuss: How did you calculate your total? (5 minutes)
| Target Distance | Round 1 Hits | Round 2 Hits | Round 3 Hits | Total Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Close (2 pts each) | ____ hits | ____ hits | ____ hits | ____ pts |
| Medium (3 pts each) | ____ hits | ____ hits | ____ hits | ____ pts |
| Far (5 pts each) | ____ hits | ____ hits | ____ hits | ____ pts |
| GRAND TOTAL: | ____ pts | |||
Review & Connect (10 minutes)
- • Review passing scores from movement block
- • Introduce: Addition and Skip Counting
- • Soccer connection: "How do we find our total score?"
Direct Instruction (15 minutes)
Skills: Addition within 20, Skip Counting by 2s, 3s, 5s
- • Model addition strategies: counting on, making 10, doubles (6 min)
- • Skip counting patterns on number line (4 min)
- • Apply to scores: adding multiple point values (5 min)
Example Problems:
1. You scored 4 hits at 2 points each. How many points? (Skip count by 2s)
2. Add your close target points + medium target points. Show two ways.
Guided Practice (20 minutes)
- • Work through 5 problems together using movement data (10 min)
- • Students practice independently with support (10 min)
Independent Work & Exit Ticket (15 minutes)
- • Complete journal problem set (10 min)
- • Exit ticket: "5 + 7 = ? Show your strategy." (5 min)
Below Grade Level
- • Use manipulatives for all addition
- • Provide number line for skip counting
- • Focus on sums within 10
- • Work with math partner
- • Simplified scoring (1 point per hit)
On Grade Level
- • Addition within 20
- • Skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s
- • Show two addition strategies
- • Complete standard problem set
- • Calculate total game score
Above Grade Level
- • Multi-digit addition (within 100)
- • Skip count by 3s, 4s, 6s
- • Compare team scores, find difference
- • Create word problems for class
- • Calculate class average score
1. Which addition strategy helped you find your score fastest?
2. How did skip counting help you calculate points?
3. If you hit 6 targets worth 3 points each, what's your score? Show your work.
4. How is adding soccer points similar to adding other things in life?
Safety First
Monitor passing lanes to prevent collisions. Ensure targets are securely placed.
Time Management
Keep scoring rounds moving quickly. Have students track their own hits to save time.
Math Accountability
Verify students can explain their addition strategy. Check that all calculations are recorded.
Common Misconceptions
Students may confuse skip counting with repeated addition. Show the connection explicitly.
