Day 1

Dribbling Fundamentals

NWEA Domain: Number Sense
Materials Needed

Movement Materials

  • Soccer balls (1 per student)
  • Cones (20-30 for course setup)
  • Measuring tape (100 feet)
  • Stopwatch or timer

Math Materials

  • Student journals (1 per student)
  • Pencils and clipboards
  • Number line posters (0-100)
  • Whiteboard and markers
60-Minute Movement Block

Warm-Up (10 minutes)

  • • Dynamic stretching: High knees, butt kicks, leg swings (3 minutes)
  • • Ball control introduction: Touch with sole, inside, outside of foot (4 minutes)
  • • Counting drill: Count touches while dribbling in place (3 minutes)

Main Activity: Cone Dribbling Course (35 minutes)

Setup: Create a 30-yard course with 8 cones spaced 5 yards apart

Skill Focus: Controlled dribbling using inside of foot, maintaining close ball control

Activity Breakdown:

  • • Demo and practice (10 min): Coach demonstrates, students practice half-speed
  • • Timed trials (20 min): Each student completes 3 timed runs, record all times
  • • Math connection (5 min): Students count total touches, identify fastest time

Cool Down (15 minutes)

  • • Static stretching: Quadriceps, hamstrings, calves (5 minutes)
  • • Data recording: Students write times in journals (5 minutes)
  • • Group reflection: What patterns did you notice in your times? (5 minutes)

60-Minute Math Lab Breakdown

Review & Connect (10 minutes)

  • • Review movement data collected during drills
  • • Introduce today's math focus: Counting and Number Sequences
  • • Connect to soccer: "How many touches did it take to complete the course?"

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

Skill: Number Sequences and Patterns

  • • Model counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s on number line (5 min)
  • • Identify patterns: "What comes next?" (5 min)
  • • Apply to soccer data: sequence times from fastest to slowest (5 min)

Example Problems:

1. If you made 15 touches in Trial 1, 18 in Trial 2, what pattern do you see?

2. Order these times: 32 sec, 28 sec, 35 sec (least to greatest)

Guided Practice (20 minutes)

  • • Students work in pairs on journal problem set (12 min)
  • • Coach circulates, provides support and checks for understanding (ongoing)
  • • Pair-share solutions, discuss strategies (8 min)

Independent Work & Exit Ticket (15 minutes)

  • • Complete journal reflection questions (10 min)
  • • Exit ticket: "What's your next number if counting by 5s from 25?" (5 min)
Differentiation Strategies

Below Grade Level

  • • Provide number line reference tool
  • • Allow counting with manipulatives
  • • Simplified sequences (count by 1s only)
  • • Partner with on-level peer
  • • Reduce number of problems (5 instead of 10)

On Grade Level

  • • Complete standard problem set
  • • Count by 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s
  • • Order numbers to 100
  • • Identify simple patterns
  • • Work independently or with partner

Above Grade Level

  • • Extended sequences (3s, 4s, 25s)
  • • Create own counting patterns
  • • Compare and contrast multiple data sets

⚠️ Important Coaching Notes

Safety First

Ensure adequate space between students during dribbling. Check that the field is clear of hazards before starting.

Time Management

Use a visible timer. Give 2-minute warnings before transitions. If running behind, skip extension activities rather than rushing core content.

Math Accountability

Students must complete data table and at least 5 journal problems before dismissal. Collect journals to verify completion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse counting sequences with addition. Emphasize that we're continuing a pattern, not adding the same number repeatedly.
