High School Education Intern

New Haven Counts is seeking proactive and dedicated Education Interns to support our Education Coordinators, Engagement Coordinator, and on-site educational teams in our 15 partner schools. This role offers hands-on experience in education, community engagement, and nonprofit operations. Interns will engage with both afterschool tutoring and enrichment programs for student-athletes and student-leaders.

  • Development of communication, teamwork, and leadership skills

Eligibility Pathway (Bridge Process)

Before being considered for a paid internship, candidates participate as community volunteers to gain first-hand experience and demonstrate reliability. This pre-hire volunteer stage is not employment and is not compensated. It serves as a prerequisite for eligibility, ensuring a strong foundation before moving into paid roles.

Eligibility: Grades 9-12 are all eligible. Preferences go to those who display the most maturity, commitment, and impact on students.

Guaranteed Spot: Once accepted, you have a guaranteed spot unless you lose it or don't respond to information for re-enrollment each August.

Admission: Rolling admission from August to April each year.

Step 1: Fulfill Prerequisites

• Satisfactory completion of all New Haven Promise service requirements or 30 hours of community service in the New Haven Tutoring Initiative.

• Request recommendations from your current site supervisor(s).

• All site supervisors must provide satisfactory evaluations for you to advance to the next stage.

Step 2: Internship Bridge

• Once eligibility is confirmed, you may be invited to the internship onboarding process.

• If you do not yet meet the eligibility criteria, you may continue volunteering until you do.

Standard Compliance Disclaimer

The community service and training activities described above are part of the eligibility process and not employment with New Haven Counts. Completion of these steps qualifies candidates to be considered for paid internship or staff positions. Individuals are not classified as employees—and are not entitled to wages or benefits—until they have been officially hired and added to the payroll system.

A Note for Interns

Once you complete your initial training and become a paid intern, you never have to re-fulfill the prerequisite service hours. All your time is compensated. However, if you need community service hours for programs like New Haven Promise, you can request for specific work to count towards your service hours instead of receiving payment for that time.
